As I understand it, the old family is abandoned and we will not see a continuation of Winifred and Lawrence?
I wouldn't say they are abandoned as much as they are just archived. I'm in the middle of finishing up my last English credit, and beginning a dental hygiene program after that which is an extremely difficult and surprisingly competitive field to get into, while also planning my wedding, and working full-time.
Playing the game for an hour or two each day, or something close to, and spending five or ten minutes editing vs spending an hour just finding poses, then writing the story, setting everything up in game, and editing in a way that satisfies me are very different energy levels.
It is my ultimate goal to be in a good headspace, with a healthy balance for leisure, studying and having financial stability, but right now, that's difficult to come by. I miss The Baudelaires every single day but their story also deserves to be told the right way, especially the more sensitive parts that require more research and figuring out how to present it in a palatable way. And again, especially when you consider that the Baudelaire's are living in, what today, is considered Northern Ireland in the early 1900's and there are significant moments in history quickly approaching that I must tell correctly and would feel wrong to just gloss over simply because I'm pressed for time and rushed through it just to get a post out.
I think it's easy for us to look at these historical events through a lens of academia and perhaps even through rose tinted glasses in some respects. But, for me at least, it feels so much deeper when you are telling it through a personal narrative perspective. For example, the suffragette movement. Yes it was a movement that gave women the right to vote but it also was extremely prejudice and by and in large excluded women of color. Yet, I rarely see that ever presented or shown in the stories written here. Now, I do understand that perhaps people feel they shouldn't share that history out of respect but I also think it's important to be honest about the fact that even the "progressive" women of the time were not all that progressive by today's standards. Or even the various wars that are coming quickly, like The Great War and the Irish Civil War. Civilians are always the ones who suffer the most when it comes to war, and again, I personally would feel wrong not showing that or mentioning it, at the very least.
But again, that also requires a lot more research on my part, while also staying true to who my characters are at their core and considering how these significant things would shape and bend their moral compasses, and impact their relationships with each other (because, spoiler, it will definitely have an affect on their interpersonal relationships within the family).
Now, that isn't to say I don't put as much love and care into the Flores Legacy because I still adore them as well or that I won't try to present these things where I can! But it is different in terms of perfectionism because of the fact that it's mostly gameplay and the game helps to steer their story in some ways whereas The Baudelaires are completely directed by me alone, if that makes any sense.
I apologize for the long rambling answer but I needed to get my point across that The Baudelaires are my babies. I have been playing them for years at this point and Winifred in particular is my favorite Sim that I have ever created in my 20 years of playing the sims franchise, and it was not an easy decision to put their story on hold. But I miss playing the game, and I miss historical simblr, so I decided to do something a little different, even if that's disappointing for some or even for myself.
Tl;Dr: they're not abandoned so much as they are just simply archived for right now.

Here’s some of the headcanons I had for Zelda’s mom —
- Her full name is Georgiana Winifred Hyrule, but she likes being called Georgie by her close friends and family
- She reunifies the Hylians and the Sheikah after 10,000 years, and immediately began studying their technology afterwards
- She doesn’t have Zelda until her early/mid 30’s because she was so busy with the Sheikah (and admittedly she didn’t think she would be a good mother but was basically forced to because she was crowned queen)
- Her mother, the previous queen, is still alive and likes making a bunch of unhelpful remarks to Georgie (lol)
- Rhoam was Georgie’s personal knight, making it seamless when he married into the royal family (especially since, despite his physical prowess, he was better at royal politics than Georgie was)
- oh and she dies of assassination (which I will get around to writing one of these days lol)
*throws all my headcanons of Zelda's mother into the trash*

A truly bleak tale set in New Orleans at the end of the 19th century following Edna as she begins to have an awakening about feminism which affects her daily life. This is regarding as one of the first novels to primarily focus on the concept of feminism.
Agatha Christie Mysteries
Agatha Christie was so good at what she did that her books are still used today in toxicology classes and she largely helped define the mystery genre
Nancy Drew Mysteries by Carolyn Keene
Though written for children, the Nancy Drew books follow the amateur detective and her female friends as they solve mysteries in mid-20th-century America and the character has become a cultural icon.
Gathering Blue and Son from “The Giver Quartet” by Lois Lowry
Books 2 and 4 in the Giver Quartet. While books 1 and 3 are also good, books 2 and 4 are featured here because they have female protagonists. The books are part of a series, but only loosely connected and can be read as standalone books if desired. Gathering Blue follows Kira in a dystopian future as she makes a place for herself in her village through her ability to dye cloth, a skill which helps prevent her from being cast out for being disabled. Follows Maggie and her book-worm father after she discovers her father has the ability to bring to life any book that he reads aloud. They are quickly swept off into the narrative of a fantasy novel.

Music:
Florence Welch
Lana Del Rey
Lorde
Hozier
Enya
Alice Merton
Regina Spektor

Chapter I: A Bright Opportunity
Tumblr media
Clad in robes of deep red and gold, she waited in the shadow of the hidden door, peering through the crack of it being ajar, the hidden stone tunnel stretching out behind her. Her slim body was leaned back against the cold wall as she waited for her contact's company to leave the room. Once alone, she stepped silently out of the shadows and into the warm golden light that poured in through the polished windows, kissing the skin of the woman's face as soon as she pushed her hood down from her head and onto her shoulders.
"Your majesty." She addressed formally, kneeling down as she bowed her head towards the floor and placed a hand over her heart.
"Winifred, I take that your presence before me means you have something of importance?" The red-haired queen of England queried, waving off the alerted guards to lower their weapons before gesturing for the other woman to stand.
"Of course." Spoke the assassin, rising from her bow to pluck a letter from her pocket, the red wax seal already broken, she handed it over to her queen, "A plot by the Vatican - and I'm afraid that your cousin Mary may be involved too, Elizabeth."
"Thank you." The queen spoke, sucking down a breath as she thought of the gravity of the situation - yet another burden for the queen's already heavy shoulders, "Though, this only means more work for you, I need you to uncover if Mary truly is involved, I want to know exactly what powers are conspiring against me and my throne."
"I'll get right to it, your majesty."

██████████████]99%
(Y/n) opened her (e/c) orbs, her vision fuzzy from sleep. An irritated groan was pulled from her lips when she reached for her phone, her alarm blaring in her tired ears. It was six in the morning and her usual time to get up for school.
Her dream was quickly fading from her memory, all she could remember was seeing Queen Elizabeth I of England and an old-fashioned letter with a seal. "Proof that I'm passing history, I suppose." She grumbled to herself as she unlocked her phone to check all her social medias before she exited her plush bed. It was full of white fluffy blankets and pillows and shielded her body from the cold air that nipped at anything outside of her blankets. Her light grey walls stood tall around her in her rather plainly decorated bedroom - there wasn't much aside from her wardrobe and organised desk.
She quickly finished up checking all her messages before jumping out of bed and heading to the bathroom to relieve herself, wash her face and to brush her teeth, shivering gently at the cold temperature, all too eager to get back to her room where she could wrap herself in a blanket as she readied herself.
Upon returning to her room, she began dressing for the day of school that lie ahead, sitting on the floor in front of her full-length mirror to style her (h/l) (h/c) hair and do her usual makeup. As she went through her morning routine, she danced around a little to the music that was playing from her phone - mostly her favourite songs by Lana Del Rey with some Billie Eilish and some classics thrown into the playlist.
Once she was done, she headed downstairs to make herself a coffee to drink while she sat at the dining table doing any homework that was due in that week.
She was the only person in the house. The solitude never bothered her ever since she was young - her parents worked a lot and she never had much of a close relationship to them anyway. In fact, relationships weren't something she was accustomed to anyway - her parents' work meant that they moved house a lot so she never really managed to make friends or stay in touch with them either. But, she was perfectly content with her studies and happily sitting at the top of her classes.
She was one of those people that could never get enough - no matter what she did, there had to be more to get done. For every lesson, there would be another three to learn to push herself further. 'Why settle for less when you can be the best?' she would often say to herself whenever she took a little break from studying to browse the internet on her phone.
Once it was time to leave the house, she was pulling on a coat and slinging her bag over her shoulder, drinking down the last of her slowly cooling coffee.
Her walk was just like any other usual day, taking the paths beside the main road while her music accompanied her through the cold early-spring morning. She let out a sigh while her playlist shuffled in her headphones, blasting loudly in her ears. She passed familiar paths and roads, stopping at the same traffic lights. (Y/n) had the option to be driven to school by the family driver but she preferred the twenty minutes of morning air considering she didn't leave the house often enough.
When she arrived in school, she made her way towards the library where she pulled a notebook and textbook out of her bag, going over chemistry topics regarding balancing equations and relative atomic mass. Her music played softly in her ears now, music without vocals that would distract her if present in the song. This was how her day went: get to school and study, attend classes to study, sit studying at break, attend more classes to study, have a small break for a light snack and drink at lunch before studying then attend her final lesson to study. Once she got home, she'd sleep for a while then listen to music/ paint/ read a book before studying until dinner; after dinner, she'd have a bath and take some time to look after herself before going to bed.
(Y/n) could admit that a change in routine was all she longed for but she didn't know anything else. She had no friends to go out with and didn't really have anything interesting going on at all aside from family events. She wanted a change desperately but had no clue where to start - whenever she tried to mix things up, she'd always fall back into the same routine out of habit. When the bell went off, she packed her notebooks neatly away into her navy blue bag and tucked her phone into her pocket.
The approach of yet another repetitive day.
She sat through her first three lessons, her work at top standard and focus sharp as she pressed herself in her studies more and more. Her attention was following the video on the board that was explaining the use of tangent with angles of elevation and depression, noting down little features to keep in mind (all of which she already knew but noted it down nonetheless to show classwork) when a male teacher, who was escorting a female visitor, entered the classroom, making his way across the room to the teacher's desk. The (e/c)-eyed female had seen the grey-haired teacher around the school before and was rather sure he was one of the receptionists. She watched the hushed conversation quickly occur between the receptionist and maths teacher before the man straightened his back.
"(Y/n) Glacier, could you come with me please?" He spoke up, the student opened her mouth slightly, wondering why she had to be taken out of class.
"Do I need my bag?" She quizzed, reaching for the strap of the navy bag that rested by her feet.
"Yes, please," He spoke as he made his way back outside. (Y/n) quickly gathered her things and made her way outside, closing the door quietly behind her. Her (e/c) gaze managed to get a better look at the visitor. She was a woman in her late middle-ages with fair light brown hair and turquoise eyes. She wore a purple blazer and skirt with a white blouse and black heels.
"I'm not in trouble am I?" The student quizzed, she had no idea why she had been taken out and was beginning to grow worried that she might have done something; though, there was nothing that she was able to think of.
"On the contrary, dearie." The visitor spoke up as they walked towards a classroom, that was bare aside from the school's headmaster, where the three of them took a seat. The school's headmaster was a woman nearing being elderly with jet black hair that presented a few grey streaks. On her nose were thick-rimmed glasses and she wore a deep red blazer with a white blouse and a flowing black skirt that reached her ankles. She was a good headmaster and had been running the school for the good part of three decades from what (Y/n) had heard.
"Miss (L/n), this is Miss Pearl Attaway." The headmaster spoke, "She's a member of staff at Vermere Lake Grammar School and she's representing the board there that are searching for students to join seeing as it's a new establishment."
"Ok. . ." (Y/n) began slowly, "I suppose, to begin with, I'd like to ask: why me?" She began picking at a thread on her skirt under the table, finding herself to be rather nervous.
"Your grades are outstanding, (Y/n)." Pearl Attaway began, "We're looking for students with gifted minds like yours, you'd be a wonderful asset to the school."
"Where is this school?" The (s/t)-skinned student quizzed, wanting to know everything about it before she began to make up her mind on attending.
"The French countryside." The visitor replied. (Y/n) opened her mouth to speak but was cut off, "I know what you're thinking and I'm sure that the proposal of a boarding school comes as quite a shock but your parents have been spoken to and they both are in favour of you going and have left the final decision up to you." (Y/n) stopped to think. This choice was going to be far more difficult and impactful than she originally thought.
"I think that I'm going to need more time to make up my mind on this. . . I mean: France? A boarding school? I've never done anything like that before, I've never stayed away from my house unless I'm with family. . ." She looked down at her lap. This could be her chance to really advance in her studies! And the fact that they had sought her out specifically too! Would she be around more like-minded people?
"It's perfectly understandable if you want some time to think this over but I'm afraid that I'll be needing an answer before the end of the month," Pearl replied. That gave (Y/n) three weeks to make her big decision. The (h/c)-haired student turned to her headmaster.
"I know it's a lot to ask for but could I go home? I want to be somewhere where I can have some clear-headedness to think about this and I'd like to talk to my parents too. It's understandable for you to say no." She requested. The older woman tossed the idea around in her head for a moment.
"I'll have to contact your parents but I'm sure they'll allow you to return home." She smiled as she stood up, everyone else in the room following suit. The receptionist began leading Pearl away. However, the woman in purple paused on the threshold of the door.
"We hope that you'll choose to join us, (Y/n)." And with that said, she was around the corner and out of sight.
"If I may add my thoughts on this," The headmaster spoke up as she began leading (y/n) to her office in order to make a phone call to the student's parents, "I believe this is an excellent opportunity for you, I've seen your grades and your class books and I believe that this school cannot provide the facilities and teachings that you need to further your education. This would be perfect for you."
"I know. . ." (Y/n) began thoughtfully, "It's just the boarding school part that's making me hesitate. I've never been away from my family before." It was true that she was used to solitude but she was used to that in her own household, not in the countryside of another country surrounded by other people her age. She was certainly stuck on the fence. . .
The call was made and she was sent home, hence why she was laying on her bed of lightly coloured pillows and blankets, staring up at her white ceiling.
"This could be the change you want - no! - need! This could be your way to get a change in routine and press yourself to be the best! But it's so far away. . . And? You're not close to your family anyway, it's not like you can't call them for comfort if need be. You're not exactly leaving any friends behind either. . . What if you can make some friends there? If they're looking for people like you perhaps you can get on well with them. This could be the best decision of your life! Or the worst. . . Come on, you get to go to another country and attend an outstanding school! Don't let sentiment hold you back! It's a boarding school, I'm sure you can bring whatever you want to make yourself feel at home. Tell you what: let's do it! Let's go to this school! What have I got to lose? The worst thing that could happen is getting homesick." And so, she reached across the bed for her phone to contact her father who would tell Pearl Attaway that (Y/n) would be attending Vermere Lake.
For the first time in her life, the change she longed for was finally within reach.

Francis Bacon
Tumblr media
https://www.artsy.net/article/artsy-editorial-francis-bacon
https://www.francis-bacon.com/artFrom a small London studio littered ankle-deep with source material, bottles of fine champagne, and a cacophony of paint splatters, Francis Bacon conjured some of the most innovative and, as art critic Robert Melville once put it, “satanically influential” paintings of the 20th century. His canvases writhe with fleshy, screaming, contorted figures, from popes and famed art-historical subjects to friends and ill-fated lovers. His searing work embodies a host of post-war cultural anxieties, as well as Bacon’s personal demons and obsessions.
But what was this mighty, enigmatic painter’s secret to creating such spellbinding imagery—and, all the while, upholding his status as king of the bon vivants? Below, we pull back the curtain on who Bacon was, what motivated his deeply affecting paintings, and why their sulfurous power won’t be fading anytime soon.
Who Was Francis Bacon?
Bacon was a complex man whose work was informed by a tangled web of intense relationships, art-historical fixations, and a fair number of vices. Born in Dublin in 1909 to a domineering father, Capt. Anthony Edward Mortimer, and his much younger wife, Christina Winifred Firth, Bacon was derided as a “weakling” and, as legend has it, horse-whipped by his father during his youth due to issues with chronic asthma. Francis Bacon Three Studies for Self-Portrait, 1976 Richard Gray Gallery
But despite (or perhaps because of) his asthmatic bouts and the abuse he endured, Bacon was strong-willed and resilient, with the constitution of a bull. He drank, ate, gambled, loved, and painted with such voraciousness that he rarely had time for sleep; two to three hours a night was typical. Through this haze of debauchery and hard living, and bolstered by deep friendships and aesthetic obsessions, Bacon produced a cascade of paintings that were not only disturbingly beautiful, but also boldly original. His shocking work galvanized the group of painters surrounding him in mid-century London (the “School of London”) and eventually influenced several generations of artists to come, includingDamien Hirst, Jenny Saville, and Jake and Dinos Chapman, to name just a few. What Inspired Him? After Bacon was jettisoned from his family home, he embarked on a series of European escapades that opened his eyes to art and design, not to mention other earthly pleasures, like sex and wine. Several works he encountered during his travels made a lasting impact on his work and wouldn’t leave his mind until his death in 1992. While studying French near Chantilly in 1927, he happened upon Poussin ’sgreat Massacre of the Innocents (1628–29) and was struck by the emotional agony of the scene, embodied forcefully in the screaming maw of a mother whose child is about to be killed. Later that year, he picked up a book detailing diseases of the mouth, and not long after that, he watched Sergei Eisenstein’s 1925 film Battleship Potemkin, which features a scene of a howling, bloodied nurse—an image permanently tattooed on his mind. Around that time, on a trip to Paris, he was also introduced to Picasso ’searly figurative drawings. All these run-ins provided Bacon with his initial art education (he was never formally trained) and went on to influence his unique approach to rendering the human body as a malleable—and, at times, grotesque—vessel of raw human feeling.

The wide-open mouth would later materialize in some of the painter’s greatest canvases: his series of wailing popes, which he toiled over from 1949 until 1971. They show blurred, bethroned men caught in the act of an intense and seemingly eternal scream that, as Bacon biographer Michael Peppiatt has said, might have referred simultaneously to the militaristic orders of Bacon’s father, the raging rows between Bacon and his tortured lover Peter Lacy, or more simply, to a cry of fear or the climax of a body-quaking orgasm. This was the rare power of Bacon’s work: fusing a range of references into a Frankenstein’s monster of a whole, a beast shuddering with frustration, tension, and countless other, subtler emotions.
Bacon’s “Popes” also reveal another influence: Velázquez ’s Portrait of Pope Innocent X (1650), a painting Bacon became so infatuated with that he admitted to having a “crush” on it. Time and time again, Bacon would rework his own version of the masterpiece, although, interestingly, he refused to see the painting in person when he finally made a trip to Rome. He was embarrassed, he told Peppiatt, of his many “stupid” manipulations of the piece.
Alongside the many other great artists (Giacometti, Van Gogh, and Matisse among them) who influenced Bacon, the painter also looked for creative guidance in the work of writers and poets—namely Racine, Baudelaire, and Proust. He was attracted to their ability to pare down the complexities of human existence into succinct lines and phrases; he sought to do the same with the arresting figures rooted at the core of his canvases.

THREE STUDIES FOR A CRUCIFIXION 1962 Oil on canvas Triptych: Each panel: 78 x 57 in. (198.1 x 144.8 cm)
How Did He Work?
Reproductions of Bacon’s inspirations—like the Massacre of the Innocents, along with tattered photos of wild animals, Egyptian talismans, and more—ended up in a soupy jumble on the floors of the many studios he occupied over the course of his career. The exuberant mess was accented with paint and the occasional vestiges of parties he hosted after a long night of carousing through London’s drinking clubs and gambling houses. One of Bacon’s friends, the painter Graham Sutherland , once described Bacon’s early Cromwell Place studio as “a large chaotic place, where the salad bowl was likely to have paint on it and the painting to have salad dressing on it.” But for all his decadence, Bacon was also extremely dedicated, with his own brand of regimentation. “You have to be disciplined in everything, even in frivolity,” he was known to have said. “Above all in frivolity.” Indeed, his passion for enthusiastic and prolonged socialization seemed to fuel his work. Without fail, after a late night of partying, he would wake up at 6 a.m. to paint for several hours in the morning light. Then he’d begin dining and boozing about town, liaising with his many friends and acquaintances, from fellow painters Lucian Freud and Frank Auerbach to renowned London collectors, such as the Sainsbury’s, to one of his many lovers, like Lacy or Eric Hall. He even went so far as to say that he worked better after a night of drinking: “My mind simply crackles with electricity after one of those evenings,” he once boasted to his friends. “I think the drink actually makes me freer.”
Tumblr media
THREE FIGURES AND PORTRAIT 1975 Oil, pastel, alkyd paint and sand on canvas 78 x 58 in. (198.1 x 147.3 cm)
There were some risks to this routine, however. On several occasions, he’d come home late at night, wildly drunk, and decide to “perfect” a painting he’d finished the day before, only to wake up the next morning and discover that he’d ruined it. After one of these episodes, his gallery began collecting his paintings from his studio the moment he finished them.
Bacon’s childhood nanny, Jessie Lightfoot, who lived with the painter until her death in 1951, and his two primary dealers—first Erica Brausen at Hanover Gallery, then Valerie Beston at Marlborough Gallery—also played major roles in helping organize his life and career. When Bacon was struggling financially during his youth, Lightfoot helped him find lovers who would also provide financial support. Brausen became a close friend and confidante; they bonded over their shared homosexuality and appetites for risk-taking (Bacon’s on the canvas; Brausen’s on the walls of her gallery). And starting in 1958, Miss Beston, as she was affectionately called, arranged almost all of Bacon’s day-to-day logistics during his most successful years. She paid his bills, arranged his calendar, made sure his apartment stayed clean, and kept him to his painting schedule. She also kept his canvases out of the trash bin, as he was known to destroy them.
Why Does His Work Matter?
Bacon brought new emotional intensity to the painted figure by representing his subjects—be they friends or mythological figures—as contorted, fleshy, emotionally open masses. He sought to reveal, in all its complexity, what was behind the human facade. “I would like my pictures to look as if a human being had passed between them, like a snail leaving its trail of the human presence…as a snail leaves its slime,” he once said. Indeed, Bacon’s paintings pulsate with the dual energy of human suffering and ecstasy. They seem to unearth, in their blurred limbs and wide-open mouths, our most primal urges. (Scholars have noted that in his canvases from the 1950s, monkeys and men often closely resemble one another.)

AUSTIN’S IDEAL NANCY DREW GAME #13
Nancy Drew: The Tudor Queen Treasure
Teaser:
“Who would imagine that a trip to London would reunite me with the one and only Professor Beatrice Hotchkiss? It seems that this time, her focus is a treasure which ties back to the six ex-wives of Henry Viii. So, the two of us made our way to the Tower of London, the final resting place of Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, the two beheaded ex-wives. But, as soon as we begin our hunt, we soon find ourselves a saboteur, just as we did at Wickford Castle! Someone is also after this treasure which was hidden cautiously by the six ex-wives of Henry VIII. Each ex-wife has hid a clue and setup elaborate puzzles in the Tower of London in order to lead to Henry VIII’s long lost treasure. So, join me, as I try not to lose my head in, The Tudor Queen Treasure.”
Characters:
Professor Beatrice Winifred Gertrude Hotchkiss: The scholar of French History whom Nancy met in Wisconsin and who also has had contact with in Egypt and New Orleans. Finds Nancy while on vacation in London and asks her to accompany her to the Tower of London. Her main interest is in Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, the decapitated queens, but knows all about all queens. Could her knowledge give her an upper hand in this treasure hunt?
Lionel Bailey (Matt Smith)- An actor at the Tower of London who portrays Henry VIII in historical reenactments. He is goofy and is easy to approach. Could he be more than just playing the part of Henry VIII?
Amelia Carey (Millie O’Connell)- An actress at the Tower of London who portrays Anne Boleyn in historical reenactments. She is energetic but can also be a bit snappy if she is rubbed the wrong way. She is very sarcastic and has a strange attachment to Boleyn. Could her attachment to Boleyn be more than she lets on?
Nina Brown (Aimie Atkinson)- An actress at the Tower of London who portrays K(c)atherine Howard in historical reenactments. She is tall and the more nonchalant in the bunch. She has a secret romance with Lionel behind the scenes. Could her nonchalant nature be a facade?
ABOUT THIS MYSTERY:
There is a puzzle requiring you to know which queens were divorced, beheaded, and which queen survived.
The characters all wear historical reenactment costumes which fit the time period of the reign of Henry VIII in the 1800′s
There is a dungeon in the Tower of London with a guillotine.
There are a couple of unexplained incidents which are made to believe were done by Anne Boleyn’s ghost.
The saboteur has ransacked, punched holes in the wall, and broken security footage in Tower of London.
There is a Tudor Queen gift shop.
Nancy can also explore the grounds of the Tower of London and the memorial of Boleyn and Howard
It is revealed that Amelia is a direct descendent of Anne Boleyn.
Catherine of Aragon left a puzzle in the main entrance and it requires you to fill in a family tree of Henry (So you read a bible verse that I'm cursed cause I was your brothers wife.)
Anne Boleyn has left several puzzles (she is the queen who orchestrated the treasure hunt and whom left it a ‘requirement’ for each wife to leave a puzzle behind when they married him. Her main puzzle is that you place all of your acquired clues into her memorial and find the treasure, as well as fill out a bunch of riddles which require you to know each queen (see first bullet). (Why did I lose my head? Well, my sleeves may be green but my lipstick’s red)
Jane Seymour’s puzzle is located in a nursery, and requires Nancy to solve a slider puzzle and the image is of their son, Thomas Seymour. (But I know without my son your love could disappear.  I know it isn't fair, but I don't care, 'Cause my love, will still be here.)
Anna of Cleves has a puzzle which requires you to make fur coats and an outfit. (Still, I have a little flirt with the footman, as he takes my fur, as you were.)
Catherine Howard has a music puzzle which involves playing the lute and playing the flute. (He plucked my strings all the way to G, went from major to minor, C to D.)
Catherine Parr’s puzzle is one which requires you to study psalms and meditations. (Remember that I was a writer, I wrote books and psalms and meditations. Fought for female education so all my women could independently start a scripture.)
The saboteur and culprit is Lionel, who thinks the treasure is rightfully his as he knows Henry VIII like the back of his hand.

❝  It was always Anne ❞
F a n d o m : Anne with an E

W a r n i n g s : spoilers for 3x08 !
✕    ✕    ✕
Bash eyed Gilbert suspiciously across the table, not saying anything.
He looked sick as he played with the food in his plate, not really eating any of it. The bags unde his eyes were deeper than usual and he looked white as a sheet. He clearly hand’t slept at all.
“Doesn’t Mr. Blythe like his breakfast this morning?” his mother asked worriedly, turning her attention from Delphine. “I can make something else if he’d like.”
Gilbert seemed to snap out of his thoughts.
Blinking up in confusion, he furrowed his brows at the woman.
“Oh, it all looks delicious. I just… uhm…” he mumbled. “I’m not exactly-”
“Mother, would you please be so kind to leave us a moment alone?” Bash interrupted him.
His mother widened her eyes at him, but she simply nodded, pursing her lips. She took Delphine and left the room without another word.
When Bash turned to Gilbert, he was back in his bubble, his eyes empty as he stared at the table.
Bash reached out and placed his hand upon his, making him look up at him.
He wasn’t too younger than him, but right there and then, Bash could see nothing but a scared kid sitting in front of him.
“Nobody is forcing you to propose.” he said as softly as he could.
Gilbert bit his lip.
“I know.” he replied, voice hoarse.
“Are you sure this is the right thing?”
Gilbert looked down and Bash followed his gaze. When he noticed what he was looking at, his heart sank a little.
The recipe book Anne had made for Delphine.
Bash didn’t know what exactly had happened between the two of them, but he could see that Gilbert was devasted, He didn’t believe Winifred and the Sorbonne could mend his broken heart, but he’d decided he would support his friend’s decision regardless.
“Yes. I’m sure.” Gilbert said, steadier this time, standing up and walking towards the sink, his back facing Bash.
“Do you want me to come with you to Charlottetwon?” he asked.
After a brief moment of silence, Gilbert turned and gave him a shaky smile.
“That would be a great help.”

“You cannot just give up now!”
“I’m not giving up!” Anne almost screamed, turning her back to Diana and storming to the window.
“Yes, you are.” her friend said subbornly. “And Anne Shirley-Cuthbert doesn’t give up. Ever.”
“I’m not giving up.” Anne repeated, turning to look at her. “I’m letting him go. I’m giving him the chance to have the life he desires. To study in the university he wants and have his dream job. I can’t offer him any of these things, Diana. She can. ”
Diana looked at her without saying anything, her expression something between anger and pity.
“You have so much to offer and you don’t even realize it.” she said softly.
“I have words to offer.” Anne replied bitterly. “Big ideas and big dreams. But no money or stabily to lead the life he’s supposed to lead. I would simply be holding him back.”
“Sometimes you can be so dense, Anne. So much for being the first of the class.”
“I’m sorry?”
Diana sighed and took her hands, leading her to the bed and making her sit.
“Listen, I think you got his words all wrong.” she said. “I don’t think he laid out what a perfect life he could have in Paris just to say that you’re keeping him from his dream, Anne.”
“And how would you interpret his words?”
“He was saying he would give it all up for you if he knew you loved him back. You are as important as his dream job, if not more. Why can’t you see it?”
For a moment, Anne forgot to how to breath.
Maybe Diana was right. His words could indeed be interpreted that way. He could have been saying he was willing to throw everything away for her.
Still, how could she keep him away from his dream now that he had a chance to finally make it come true?
“I can’t be that selfish.” she said, her voice unsteady, standing up. “He deserves this. I can’t take it away from him only because I-I don’t want to lose him.”
She heard Diana sigh heavily behind her.
“You’re not being selfish. You’re just denying both you and him the happiness you could have.”
✕    ✕    ✕
Gilbert felt sick to his stomach.
He was no expert in marriage proposals, but he doubted that was how he should feel on what was supposed to be one of the happiest days of his life.
He silently watched out of the window as the countryside run before him. He could feel Bash’s worried gaze on him, but he didn’t look up.
Was it really the right thing? Was he really making the best decision for his future?
You don’t want to be a country doctor. The Sorbonne is your dream. Winifred is lovely and her parents are supportive.
She’d laid it all out so perfectly it almost hurt.
He couldn’t get the picture of her dancing in the night out of his head, the flames reflecting the color of her wild loose hair blowing in the wind.
She’d been so beautiful. So beautiful and so impossible.
“-engangment party?”
Gilbert blinked, snapping out of his bubble and turning to Bash.
“What?”
“I said, do you have some ideas for the engangment party?”
He swallowed, feeling a knot in his stomach.
“I haven’t thought of anything yet.” he said, trying to cut the topic shortly.
Just as Bash was about to speak again, there was a loud whistle and the train, started slowing down.
Gilbert bit his lip at the sight of the ‘Charlottetown’ sign.
“Alright.” he said, shakily standing up. “Let’s go.”
“No kidding, you will have money to raise a dozen children.”
Gilbert glared at Bash who was watching the Roses house with wide eyes.
“Sorry.”
Gilbert just gave him a weak smile, turning to him and sighing.
“So, this is it.” Bash said, nodding.
“Seems like it.” Gilbert said, laughing under his breath.
It all felt so surreal. It was almost as if he wasn’t in complete control of his body.
“I’ll be waiting for you. Come look for me in the Bog when you’re finished, I was thinking about paying a visit to Mary’s friends.”
Mary. He would have given anything to have her as well by his side in that moment.
“You did bring the ring, didn’t you?”
Gilbert scoffed, rolling his eyes at him. He digged into the pocket of his coat, looking for little box he’d put his mother’s ring in.
But instead of the velvet box, his fingers touched something pointy and cold.
Frowning, he took it out and his breath instantly caught in his throat.
It was Anne’s pen. The one he’d borrowed from her at Miss Stacy’s place before the exams.
For a moment, everything that surrounded him disappeared as he looked at the tiny object in his hands.
Such a simple and small thing. He could almost still feel the warmth of her fingertips against his hand as she’d given it to him.
He could almost see her as she’d been that day, red hair glowing in the sun, nose buried deep in her book, brows furrowed together in concentration.
Be sure you marry for love.
Mary’s words resonated in his mind almost like a quiet prayer.
Wrong. This was all wrong.
He didn’t love Winifred. Not the way he loved Anne. It wasn’t fair to marry her. This wasn’t the path he was supposed to be taking.
It was always Anne. Yes, it had always been Anne indeed.
“You were right, Bash.” he finally said looking up.
“What?” Bash asked, glancing at the the pen in confusion.
“You were right about everything.”
✕    ✕    ✕
Empty.
That was how Anne felt as she stared at the steaming cup of tea in front of her. She couldn’t even bring it to her lips, her stomach tied in a tight knot.
That night, she couldn’t even bring herself to be delighted by the colorful shadows the setting sun casted on the walls of her room.
Suddenly, it looked grey around her, nothing really bringing her joy.
She’d been a child just a couple months before, and now she was sitting alone on her bed, her head heavy after crying for her lost love.
Despite the hurt, she knew she’d done the right thing. Gilbert deserved to be happy and follow his dreams in Paris, and if that meant being with another girl, then so be it.
Diana had pleaded her to run after him, to stop him before he could get on that train to Charlottetown, but she could never do such a thing to him. Now all she needed was to learn how to bury her feelings and be the supportive friend Gilbert deserved.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a sudden knock on the door.
She grunted and rolled her eyes as she stood up, starting for the door.
“Matthew, Marilla, how many times do I have to tell you?” she said. “I’m alright you don’t need to-”
She stopped as soon as she opened the door because it wasn’t Matthew or Marilla’s worried faces that greeted her this time.
It was Gilbert’s.
“Hi.” he simply said, giving her a weak smile.
Anne couldn’t bring herself to greet him back, her voice stuck in her throat.
She simply stared at him, her chest heavy. His curls were all messy, his cheeks red, lips slightly parted as he tried to catch his breath. Had he always been this handsome?
Anne cursed herself in her mind for never noticing what a great person she’d had by her side for years and years. If only she’d been less foolish and childish, things would be completely different now.
When she noticed the intensity with which he was looking at her, she felt the urge to lower her eyes to the ground.
“What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice more unsteady than she had hoped it would sound.
“Oh… uhm- I came to give this back.” he said, clearing his throat.
She bit her lip as she watched him pull out the pen she’d let him borrow that day at Miss Stacy’s place. She took it hesitantly, careful not to even brush her fingers against his.
“I-I hope it was of some help.” she stuttered, still not meeting his eyes. “During the uhm- exams.”
“It definitely was.” he said promptly.
Anne finally looked up at him, and she almost melted under his fond gaze. How could he look at her that way?
She felt tears sting the the corner of her eyes as a picture of him and Winifred together crossed her mind. He was engaged now for sure.
Sighing heavily, she took a step back from him, clutching the pen tightly.
“Thanks for bringing this back.” she said, hoping he would get it was his cue to leave.
Gilbert looked at her with a weird expressiom before he nodded and put his cap back on.
“I’ll see you around, then.” he said timidly.
No, I’ll make sure to steer clear for a while. She didn’t say it though.
She watched as he made his way down the alley, feeling as if he was taking a part of her heart away with him. Soon he’d be married, and there was nothing she could do about it.
He’d almost reached the stairs when he suddenly turned to her again.
“I didn’t propose.” he blurted out, his face suddenly red.
Anne felt all the air leave her lungs. She stumbled backwards and grabbed the door knob to steady herself.
Had she heard right?
“W-what?”
Gilbert walked forward slowly until he was standing right in front of her again.
“I didn’t propose to Winifred.” he repeated, swallowing.
Anne bit her lip, trying to calm down her heartbeat, her head spinning.
“But why?”
He didn’t answer her. He simply stared at her silently, his gaze flicking between her eyes and her lips.
“Why?” she asked again louder this time. “She’s an amazing girl, her parents could get you into the Sorbonne by fall. It was your dream, you had it all within reach, why would you ever even-”
“Because I don’t love her.” he interrupted her.
Anne blinked up at him, unable to say anything.
“I don’t love her.” Gilbert repeated, lowering his gaze. “Not the way I love- not the way I’m supposed to love the woman I decide to marry. It just wasn’t… right. She wasn’t the right person.”
When the right person comes along, someday, whenever that is, I’ll know.
A long silence stretched between them before Anne finally found the strenght to speak again.
“So… no Sorbonne.”
Gilbert shrugged.
“Queen’s will be more than fine for the time being. We’ll have to keep up the good old rivalry for a bit.”
Anne couldn’t help but smile.
Gilber smiled back at her, almost shyly, and she found herself blushing.
“I’ll be off.” he said after a while. “It’s been a long day.”
Anne nodded and he turned, walking  down the alley again.
“Gilbert!” she called after him before he could disappear down the stairs.
“Yes?”
She fidgeted with the pen, twirling it nervously between her fingers.
“I’m happy you’re coming to college with m- with all of us.”
Gilbert smiled.
“I’m happy too.”
“Goodnight, Gilbert.”
“Goodnight, Anne.”
And for the first time in weeks, it truly was a good night.

The Complicated Relationship of Gilbert and Moody
An Analysis That No One Asked For But Got Anyway
By G.H. Tehrani, Psychology Student
Tumblr media
The relationship of Gilbert Blythe and Moody Spurgeon is complicated to say the least. It is also complicated to analyze, given that the amount of screentime of them is extremely limited, ranging anywhere from a few seconds to a minute. But from this little screentime showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett gave us, there is a lot to break down. While you may think this is an unimportant relationship to break down (why not Moody and Charlie, or Gilbert and Billy?), Gilbert and Moody could actually have a large role in future seasons and can say something really interesting about the state of society - but more on those later.  First, we have to take it back to the beginning.
Where It All Started: Season 1
As you all know, because we are watching from Anne’s perspective, we meet the schoolkids after they have all known each other for years. We don’t know exactly how long they have known each other, but since it’s a small town, I’m going to guess it’s been since they were little kids.
In episode 3, Gilbert walks into the schoolhouse and we instantly know his social role. He’s the tall, smart, popular guy with the dark eyes that all the girls love. Interestingly enough, the first person to call out Gilbert’s name when he returns to school is Moody, who immediately pulls him away to ask him all about his travelling adventures.
Tumblr media
Moody is, simply put, the opposite of Gilbert in Season 1. He’s shorter than the other boys, chubby and jolly. It’s not a far cry to say that Moody admired Gilbert, and aspired to be like him, especially since Gilbert is a year older. Most of the boys did. Moody most likely always wished that he could have the same kind of attention that Gilbert gets from the girls, instead of just being called “ridiculous” (as Diana delightfully put it). No one would ever call Gilbert ridiculous...he’s Gilbert!
We can tell by their interactions that Gilbert is at least vaguely friends with Moody and the other boys. He jokes around with them, goofs off in class, and generally seems to be having a good time with them.
Tumblr media
But when Gilbert’s father dies in Season 1 Episode 6, we see a drastic change in Gilbert’s personality, and this lends itself to changes within his relationships as well.
Gilbert’s Crisis: Season 1 to Season 2
Tumblr media
After Mr. Blythe’s death at the end of Season 1, we see a much more emotionally disturbed version of Gilbert. He’s grieving, and not taking it well. He pushes everyone away, including Anne, and punches Billy in the face when he calls him his “bud”. Although we don’t see Moody in any of this, we do get a look inside Gilbert’s head. The insensitivity of his classmates puts him off and for the first time, he sees the gap between him and them. They’re still kids and don’t understand the weight of what he’s going through. This most likely factored into his decision to leave town and travel the world.
When he meets Bash, it seems like Bash gets through to him, helping him heal from his father’s death. He sings, writes letters to Anne, and seems like he’s having the time of his life (who wouldn’t be, travelling is awesome). He also discovers his passion for medicine when he gives birth to a baby in Trinidad.
Tumblr media
Growing Up: Season 2
Tumblr media
While Gilbert was travelling the world, Moody was having some firsts of his own. He has his - presumably - first kiss in Season 2 Episode 5, when he’s forced to kiss Diana during spin the bottle. But overall, it seems like he was still the same character he was in Season 1, just a little older, but that could be because we hardly get to see him this season, at least in the first 5 or so episodes.
But it seems that travelling did Gilbert a world of good, because when he returns to Avonlea with Bash, we see him chatting with his schoolmates.
Tumblr media
He seems perfectly fine here, almost like his old sociable self, but there’s a distance there. Things can’t quite be the same. He agrees to help with the pantomime, but stays off to the side, not interacting with any of his schoolmates. He actually never interacts with his schoolmates after that brief shot in Episode 6 of Season 2, except for going to help Cole when he breaks his wrist (thanks, Billy), but that doesn't entirely count, since he was in Doctor Blythe mode. In every schoolhouse scene, Gilbert is sitting by himself studying for his vocation. We really don't see any kind of Gilbert-schoolmate relationship, nevermind Gilbert and Moody. The only times we see them in the same scene or frame was:
1. When Moody is backstage during the pantomime and Gilbert is manning the rig, however we don't see them speak to each other,
And 2. When Moody is about to lick the lightbulb and Gilbert, Anne and literally everyone else in the room yell at him not to.
So, this leaves us with Season 3, where most of Gilbert and Moody's interactions occur, and where we can really closely study their relationship.
At Odds: Season 3
Tumblr media
At the start of Season 3, we're put at a bit of disadvantage. We have no idea what happened in the last 2 years since Season 2, but we can assume that it followed the same pattern, the schoolkids growing up and having new experiences, while Gilbert drifted away into adulthood.
At the beginning of Season 3, we see him playing hockey with the boys, so he isn't completely detached (yet). Gilbert is still ignoring Ruby (more on that later) and Moody is flirting with Diana.
Tumblr media
Again they don't interact. Now, just because we don't SEE them interact doesn't mean that they never do, but it's safe to say that outside of the canon scenes, they don't either. Case in point: the 3x01 classroom scene. Gilbert is sitting in a corner reading a book, and Moody is on the other end of the room talking with some other boys. No interaction.
Tumblr media
Gilbert is playing with them, yes, but that doesn't mean he is ONE of them, not anymore anyway. (Note: It is mentioned that he leaves often to go to Charlottetown for his apprenticeship with Dr. Ward.) The boys probably view him as less of a peer and more of this distant figure who is sometimes there and sometimes isn't.
But! Remember what we mentioned early on in this essay: "It’s not a far cry to say that Moody admired Gilbert, and aspired to be like him, especially since Gilbert is a year older. [...] Moody most likely always wished that he could have the same kind of attention that Gilbert gets from the girls."
Things have changed now, Moody is older. Slimmer and taller, but that doesn't mean he's not still insecure. He still respects Gilbert and his opinion. The evidence for this?
1. In 3x05, when Moody is injured and the Indigenous healer offers him the leaf of a weeping tree, he initially refuses, only accepting because it was Gilbert who told him it was okay to eat it,
2. Also in 3x05, Moody asks Dr. Gilbert if it’s okay to dance, but Gilbert says no, so he doesn’t dance,
3. And in 3x07, when Moody rightfully criticizes Anne for her article, the moment Gilbert claps back at him in her defence, he immediately shuts up and looks almost sheepish - showing us that he really values Gilbert’s opinion, even though earlier on they are clearly seen arguing - only interrupted by Miss Stacy’s paper airplane.
Tumblr media
These are all moments that show us that Moody respects Gilbert, because he’s older and is studying to be a doctor. However, he is the only one that thinks that way. By this point, most of the Avonlea boys don’t want to be friends with Gilbert anymore (this is made clear by the fact that none of the boys are seen talking to him ever). Gilbert has pushed them away enough times for them to stay away. But Moody is the only one who still wants to be friends with Gilbert. This is evidenced by:
1. In 3x08, Moody actively attempts to make conversation with Gilbert at Miss Stacy’s house. He asks him about Winifred and invites him to the ruins (possibly hopeful that he would actually show up),
2. Also in 3x08, Moody hyperventilates and yells, “Where is Gilbert!?” - either because of Gilbert’s doctor status or because he wanted him to be there for moral support,
Tumblr media
3. In 3x09, when they’re rebuilding the school, Moody AGAIN tries to make conversation with Gilbert, asking him about Winnie and what he’s going to do after he’s married, but Gilbert blows him off and walks away in the middle of their conversation,
Tumblr media
4. and finally, in 3x10, when they get their exam results, Moody congratulates Gilbert by calling him PEI’s finest.
More than once we see Moody try to be Gilbert’s friend, supportive of him, and time and time again Gilbert blows him off or treats him like he’s less than. Because in Gilbert’s mind, he is. Moody could never understand him. We can tell by his responses to Moody’s advances. Blank stare, eyebrows, “That’s not how it works”, “I know what you meant Moody” or just not showing up. He doesn’t show up to the ruins, the only reason he went there was to talk to Anne. He treats Moody like he’s below him or just one of his patients - like in 3x05.
Not to mention that he purposefully humiliated him in 3x07 in front of Ruby. Moody was right about Anne’s article, and he was in the right to voice his opinion, and Gilbert arguably crossed a line by putting him down, exposing Moody’s feelings for Ruby to the class (don’t think Gilbert chose a random person for his demonstration).
But, I’m not going to get too ahead of myself, because we haven’t even talked about Ruby yet.
Gilbert, Moody and Ruby: Season 1 to Season 3
Tumblr media
Ruby genuinely loved Gilbert.
That’s a bold statement, but it is arguably true. She cared for him, about as much as a 10 to 16-year-old could given their less developed prefrontal cortex. Sure, it was a little obsessive, but you can’t tell me there wasn’t some actual feeling in there. In 1x03, Josie tells us Ruby has liked Gilbert for three years, and by the time we get to Season 3, six years.
S i x y e a r s. For Ruby to be able to like Gilbert for six years, she must have seen something in him other than looks (though she mentions it the most). In Season 1, Gilbert is handsome, kind, charismatic, and smart. I could see where she’s coming from. He was a good guy.
But here’s the thing, for all of Ruby’s love and adoration, Gilbert never gave her a single thing back. (Yes, he lifted her off the ground, but that was because Anne was there.)
Tumblr media
Not once did Gilbert ever do anything nice for Ruby because he actually wanted to. No matter what Ruby would do, how obvious she made her feelings, Gilbert ignored her and liked Anne - her best friend(!) instead. The gentlemanly thing to do would have been to tell Ruby he wasn’t interested in her, but that never happened. I don’t know if that makes Gilbert an oblivious boy or a jerk. But he couldn’t have been that oblivious since he’s an observant guy.
The only explanation would be that he didn’t see Ruby an important person to clear things up with. Again, we see Gilbert deeming people less than because of his own cognitive bias toward thinking he is superior to everyone else in maturity because of his life experience. The only reason he paid any attention to Anne in the first place, was because he deemed her as an equal to his superior maturity, which she was.
Given all this, where does Moody fit in?
Moody was always a good friend to Ruby. We don’t see it very much, but they were in the same school together, and Moody helped her and Anne save Miss Stacy.
Tumblr media
But that also means, being Ruby’s acquaintance/friend, he watched her cry over Gilbert for six years.
Tumblr media
For six years, he has seen Ruby try and fail to get Gilbert’s attention and be disappointed when it doesn’t work out. A never-ending cycle of tears and hurt, that Moody could do nothing to help because he was just her guy friend. We know Moody wants to help people -  that’s why he’s going to become a minister - so for him to be unable to help Ruby is just painful.
Tumblr media
In Season 3, Moody has experienced a similar situation with Diana (Diana deems people less than because of her superior social status and wealth), so now he knows how Ruby feels and he’s even more empathetic toward her.
Does Moody harbor resentment toward Gilbert for his treatment of Ruby? Maybe.
In 3x03, when Ruby is crying over Gilbert’s absence (again) and accidentally wrote his name in the newspaper. Everyone laughs but Moody looks on sympathetically, showing this is upsetting him more than it is amusing him.
When Ruby says, “Gilbert was so heroic”, Moody gives her his handkerchief, which in that time period was a very heroic thing to do. It’s an act of romance and the first nice thing a boy has ever done for Ruby...which is kind of sad if you think about it. Moody is conveying in that moment that Gilbert isn’t the only heroic boy in Avonlea (he is too).
Tumblr media
This means so much to her, that she ends up getting over Gilbert and falling for Moody instead, which is the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen on TV.
The Future of Gilbert and Moody: Season 4 and Beyond
Even though Anne with an E was sadly cancelled in November 2019, due to an ongoing dispute between Netflix and CBC, that doesn’t mean we can’t theorize about the content of a future Season 4 and 5.
We know Moody is going to be going to Queens withe rest of his classmates and Gilbert is going to University of Toronto. However, Moody’s time at Queens is probably temporary. In the books, he becomes a minister, so I searched up Bible Colleges in Canada to see where he would be able to train as one. I discovered that a new college had just opened in the late 1890s: Toronto Bible College, which trained common-folk as missionaries and ministers.
Tumblr media
The cool part? Toronto Bible College was down the street from University of Toronto.
Moody and Gilbert would be going to school together, maybe even rooming together, for the next 3 years.
How would their relationship in Seasons 1 - 3 factor in to their experience as roommates? It would be interesting to see Moody confront Gilbert for what he did to Ruby. This would give Gilbert an opportunity to redeem himself and be likable again.
Some Controversial Conclusions on Gilbert Blythe
I started this essay in early January, but it is now late March and I have left the Anne with an E fandom. One of the reasons I left was the growing toxicity and idealization of Gilbert. All the time I would see tweets and posts claiming that, “Gilbert is my dream man”, “I wish I had a guy like Gilbert”, “The only good guys are fictional (Gilbert)”. It ticked me off because it’s just not true. Gilbert is not a good guy. He is a jerk with a superiority complex.
In every version of Anne, Gilbert completely worships Anne. He adores her, writes poems for her, almost dies without her. He is very needy and clingy, and we view that as romantic, because we want to be worshiped.
Tumblr media
Dating Gilbert would include him being unable to survive without you, constantly fearing you’re going to fall out of love with him, needing constant reiteration of your feelings, showering you with affection and flowery words, and possibly not allowing you to have any male friends. That isn’t romantic.
Being true equals in a secure relationship would be understanding that you love each other - and being secure in that - and being able to let them be free to do the things they want to do without constantly needing validation. I’m not saying Gilbert in AWAE is toxic, but he has severe communication issues that no girl should have to put up with.
Tumblr media
Note: I’m not saying that Gilbert is a bad person through and through. He is a gentle soul, we see it in his interactions with Bash, Mary and Delphine. A lot of his negative actions may have subconscious causes. But we’re not slaves to our subconscious. Even if we are implicitly being a jerk, there are still conscious ways to change our behavior and become better people.

the road not taken (1/1) - a shirbert one shot
Summary: Years after the events of Season 3, a chance encounter in a bookstore brings Gilbert face-to-face with an old flame causing him to reflect on his new marriage. Features Anne and Gilbert being adorable newlyweds.
Words: 2,300+          read on: AO3
Rated:  G
.
“Oh, I’m ever so nervous,” an elegantly dressed woman moaned, her astonishing auburn hair coiffured into a fetching knot at the back of her hair.
A handsome man with unruly dark curls was watching her amusedly, his hands in his pockets. “Really, darling? I couldn’t tell.”
Anne Shirley-Cuthbert, recently Blythe, shot her husband a dark look before resuming her pacing. “What if no one comes?” She continued her fretting as though he hadn’t interrupted. “What if I go to speak and I open my mouth and nothing comes out? Has anyone ever been booed off the stage at a book reading?”
Gilbert Blythe had seen his wife in many a heightened state before—happiness, anger, righteousness, and sadness—but he was sure he’d never seen her this nervous before. “Anne, no one is going to boo you off the stage,” he assured her, stopping her pacing by placing his hands on her shoulders. “If anything, you should be preparing for your encore.”
Anne sighed softly, “That’s perfectly optimistic of you, but who’s going to encore little ol’ me?”
“Well,” said Gilbert playfully, taking up her hands in his. “I happen to know there’ll be a certain gentleman in the audience who’s scandalously in love with you.”
Anne laughed, catching on. “If that’s the case,” she said, “You best be sure to tell that gentleman that I am a happily married woman, but I thank him heartily for his enthusiasm.”
They exchanged enamored smiles, and Gilbert found his thumb unconsciously rubbing over the pearl ring that sat on her dainty finger.
Anne’s smile wilted a little as she took in their surroundings. It was a charming bookshop right in the heart of Boston, with a little podium at the front and rows and rows of chairs lined up facing it. Any other time she would have been thrilled to be there, but there was just one thing spoiling the otherwise perfect day.
“Oh Gil, I hope you’re not too disappointed we had to cancel our wedding trip for my book reading.”
“Disappointed?” Gilbert repeated, his brow furrowed. “Far from it! Anne, I love you more than anything. You know that we could be taking a trip all the way to the moon, and it wouldn’t matter so long as I was with you. This book is an amazing achievement, and I couldn’t possibly be prouder of you.”
Anne blushed prettily, complimenting her pale skin. “Dr. Blythe, please don’t say such things in public when I’m forbidden from showing you exactly how much I appreciate them.”
“Apologies, Mrs. Blythe,” Gilbert said, his smirk belying his contrite words. “It won’t happen again, I swear.”
The distance between them had become scant, and Anne’s lips were tantalizingly close enough that if he just dipped his head a bit, he would be able to press his mouth to hers. Ever since their wedding, it had become almost impossible for Gilbert to keep his hands, and lips, off of his bride. It was especially difficult when one had an equally willing and eager bride such as he did. Said bride was looking at him with coy green eyes that conveyed she didn’t truly mind a break in propriety.
He would have been happy to oblige her but there was a sudden clatter and ringing of a bell as the shopkeeper, a pleasantly plump woman in her late 50’s, hustled inside, shutting the door behind her. She gave a squeak of excitement as she spotted Anne and Gilbert, who parted reluctantly and with some embarrassment.
Mrs. Winthrop seemed too distracted to notice. “Oh, Miss Cuthbert—Oh, my apologies! Mrs. Blythe! There is quite the crowd gathering outside for your reading. Shall I start letting them inside?”
Anne swallowed, her hold on Gilbert’s hand tightening, but she managed a polite smile. “Yes, Mrs. Winthrop,” she said, “I suppose it’s almost time to begin.”
Anne turned away and looked up at Gilbert with renewed apprehension. He smiled and placed a kiss on her forehead.
“You’ll be sensational, darling,” he told her confidently. “If you need any encouragement, just look for me. I’ll be right in the back, the whole time.”
She took a deep, calming breath and nodded. Gilbert watched as she made her way to the front of the room, smoothing down non-existent wrinkles on her dress. He wanted to be up there with her, but this wasn’t his moment to be in the spotlight, it was hers: her very first book reading of her very first published book. He was just about bursting with pride.
He stepped off to the side as Mrs. Winthrop opened the front doors. Almost immediately, people started trickling in: children pulling parents along, young men and women of college age, and even a few older folks with a gleam of adventure in their eyes. The children clamored to the front of the room to get good seats, each clutching a copy of the new book in their hands, talking excitedly amongst themselves.
Soon, all of the seats were filled, leaving many to stand along the sides. It was an incredible turn out, and a smile came over Gilbert's face as he spied Anne kneeling to talk to some children up near the podium, all signs of nervousness gone. She has a wonderful way with children, Gilbert thought to himself. Someday...
“Gilbert Blythe?”
Gilbert turned at the sound of his name to see a fair-haired woman, a little older than him, making her way through the crowd towards him. When she was finally in front of him, he was shocked to meet the brilliant blue eyes of Miss Winifred Rose of Charlottetown.
“Winnie?” He asked, incredulously.
She was the last person he ever expected to see in Boston, let alone that particular bookshop. It had been more than a few years since they’d last seen each other, and they hadn’t exactly parted on amicable terms. What did you say to the woman you’d once courted and almost proposed to?
“Ah ha, so it is you!” Winifred said triumphantly. She was just as statuesque and stylishly dressed as she was when they'd first met. Her eyes appraised him admiringly from top to bottom. “Gilbert Blythe, as I live and breathe! My, my, you’ve grown into quite the handsome man, haven’t you?”
Gilbert laughed, put at ease by her friendly demeanor. “And you’re even more lovelier than I remember,” he replied. “If I might ask, what are you doing in Boston?”
“Oh, I live here now,” said Winifred. She flashed her wedding ring flippantly. “My husband is heir to a shipping enterprise that calls Boston its home port. I’ve been here, why, it must be at least two years now, though we like to travel back and forth between Paris, depending on the season. But enough about me, dear Gilbert, I am very surprised to happen upon you in this bookshop. What brings you to Boston from far away P.E.I.? Are you here for the book reading?”
“You could say that,” Gilbert hedged with a smile. “The author is my wife.”
“Your wife?” Winifred echoed, in a tone that was somehow both surprised and pleased. “How extraordinary! I had not the slightest idea A.S. Cuthbert was a woman! But, who—?” She wondered, casting her eyes towards the front of the room. A small gasp escaped her as she beheld Anne, standing near the podium, speaking to Mrs. Winthrop now. “Is that—oh, but it is! Your Anne from Avonlea?”
“A.S. Cuthbert—Anne Shirley Cuthbert. Anne Blythe, now,” Gilbert added, sure he would always get a certain thrill out of saying the words. He watched Anne smile at Mrs. Winthrop, her face lighting up, and felt his own smile grow. “Her publisher insisted that she use a nom de plume for a least her first couple of books, and Anne was so enchanted by the idea of having a nom de plume that she actually agreed to it. She started writing the book shortly after we got engaged, while I was away at medical school and she was teaching, so it’s been almost a three year process.”
“Her book has become quite popular here in the States,” Winifred informed him. “You must be very proud.”
“Proud is almost too insignificant a word,” he said absentmindedly, his gaze still focused across the room.
After a moment’s silence, he realized how rude he was being and looked away from his wife to find Winifred studying him with an indulgent smile on her face.
“Love looks good on you, Dr. Blythe,” Winifred observed. She chuckled to herself. “You know, back when you broke things off with me, I thought, well, he’ll be back in a couple weeks, but you never did come back.”
“Winifred, I’m so sorry,” Gilbert started to say, but Winifred cut him off.
“Oh dear, don’t apologize!” She laughed, patting his hand. “You didn’t wound me, only my ego perhaps. It was good of you to call the whole thing off before there were any commitments made. We wouldn’t have suited each other in the end. And besides, Anne was always your destiny. I see that now.”
Gilbert smiled, glad that there were no hard feelings between them. “I’m really happy I ran into you again, Winifred.”
“As am I, Gilbert,” she replied. Her blue eyes were wistful, yet sincere as she regarded him. “I wish you and your Anne all the happiness in the world. Now, the reading looks to be beginning, and I left my niece and nephew with their nanny, so let me rejoin them. I trust I can count on you to reintroduce me to your wife later in order to procure a few signed copies?”
“Of course,” Gilbert readily agreed.
Winifred nodded in farewell and wound her way through the crowd to find her seat. Gilbert shook his head, thinking back to those turbulent years of his youth when he was sure Anne would never care for him the way he did for her. Winnie had been beautiful, witty, and easy to be with, but there’d been one crucial flaw: she wasn’t Anne.
The thing about Anne was that she had challenged him like no one else in his entire like, and not just in regards to schoolwork; she had pushed and shaped him into becoming not only a better man, but a better human being. She was pure light and warmth, and Gilbert had always been turned to her like a plant to the sun. Their love had been hard fought and full of obstacles, mostly of their own making, but he wouldn’t change their story for anything.
“Attention everyone, attention!” Mrs. Winthrop called at the front of the bookshop, jolting Gilbert back to the present. Everyone in the audience ceased their chatter, an air of anticipation among them. “It is my great pleasure to introduce you to the author of The Many Adventures of Cordelia Fitzgerald, Miss A.S. Cuthbert!”
Mrs. Winthrop started clapping and the rest of the crowd joined in, Gilbert included, as she motioned to Anne to come forward. Anne stepped up to the podium, and Gilbert could tell even from the back of the room that her nerves had returned in full force. Her wide eyes searched the audience until they found his at last. He mustered every ounce of love and assurance he could into his expression, giving her an encouraging nod that hopefully read, You can do this .
She nodded back, taking a deep, steadying breath. Before his eyes, she transformed into the poised, confident woman he knew her to be.
“Thank you so much, Mrs. Winthrop,” she said, a bright smile on her face as she surveyed the audience. “And thank you all for joining me here today. It makes my heart swell a hundred times over to see that Cordelia has struck a chord with so many people. She helped me get through a very rough time in my childhood, and for that, I’ll always be indebted to her. So, without further ado, The Many Adventures of Cordelia Fitzgerald.”
Anne dove into the first chapter with the same charisma and gusto she always had when doing a recitation. The fact that it was her own writing she was reading was awe-inspiring to him. He, who had read and helped edit the book too many times to count, followed along mentally, focused entirely on Anne’s animated face as she spoke. The audience was equally enthralled, with Anne’s voice being the only sound in the room besides the turning of pages as they read along with her.
As she finished the chapter with a flourish, the assembly burst into applause, and Gilbert whistled exuberantly through his fingers. True to his word, he called for an encore, and his cheer was soon taken up by the rest of the crowd. Up at the podium, Anne smiled, practically laughing with joy and relief, her sparkling eyes finding his again across the room. He winked at her, grinning widely as she returned the saucy gesture with a wink of her own.
“Very well, very well, I’ll read the next chapter, if that will satisfy you all?” Anne asked playfully to raucous cries of approval.
He couldn’t tear his eyes away from her as she began the next chapter. They’d been married for two weeks, and sometimes he felt like he’d wake up and it’ll all have been a wonderful dream. Every morning he woke up with her in his arms he thanked his lucky stars that he had followed his heart all those years ago and not given up on Anne, even when he’d stupidly thought he had every reason to. He’d made a choice then, one that had felt hard at the time as a young man with so many expectations weighing on him. But watching his beautiful, passionate wife up there at the podium, fulfilling her dreams, he knew he would make the same choice over and over again, in any lifetime, in any universe.
It was Anne; always had been and always would be.

HEADCANONS
Winnie Clarington-Smythe was adopted the minute she shot out of the womb. Looking for another child to complete their little family, Sebastian and Hunter hit the jackpot when they found out about a teen couple in Lima who were having a child and were looking to adopt. Being adopted into one of the wealthiest families in Lima, Winnie never asked questions about where she came from and she never really had a thought cross by to find out about her biological parents. She knew they didn’t care enough about her to keep her and her dads were far cooler than a pair of teens who were probably working at gas stations now.
Growing up in the Clarington-Smythe family, Winnie was showered with affection but also the best things money could buy. She was always one step ahead in the fashion game, one step ahead in having the best toys, and one step ahead in life in general, and that was a lot for a child to take on, but there was one other thing that came with being a Clarington-Smythe... Private school.
Winnie actually enjoyed Crawford during her freshmen year. She played tennis and she was a part of the Canaries. It seemed like the perfect fit for a rich, white, blonde girl but she craved something else. There was no social hierarchy or Queen Bee at Crawford simply because they were all on the same level. Upperclassmen maybe got better seating at lunch, but there was no challenge and Winnie just felt like that’s what she needed so she begged her dads to transfer her to McKinley. They were against it at first because it was public school and even tried convincing her to go to Carmel since it was a public school with a good reputation, but she knew McKinley was where she needed to go. It was a school filled with the archaic ways of high school; jocks were on top and others were just plebeians.
Her dads eventually agreed and upon her sophomore year, Winnie was a Titan. It was like her dreams were finally coming true, except for the fact that her first week was absolute hell. Coming from the Canaries, there were rumors circulating that she had been sent to McKinley for the sole purpose of joining New Directions and helping the Canaries and even the Warblers at Dalton. None of it was true, but she could see why people thought that and she knew if that was to be her legacy just in her first week at McKinley then that she had her work cut out for her. So, she skipped joining the glee club or anything pertaining to the performing arts at all which broke her a little inside since it was the one thing she truly enjoyed at Crawford and traded in her headband for a ponytail and polyester, choosing to join the Cheerios to throw her higher up on the social wagon quicker than most.

My Nickname & Others That I Think are Cute (with origins and meanings!)
TWELVE ( 12 ) NAMES and NINE ( 9 ) NICKNAMES below!
Theodore / Edward - Ted - Teddy
My pen name / online nickname is Teddy because of its connection with cute soft toy bears, which got their name in fact from Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt. I also had a Great Uncle Ted whose full first name was in fact Edward.
Theodore; ‘gift of God’
Edward; guardian, protector
Margaret - Maggie - Peggy
Not sure how many of you know this already but I was always confused as to how Agent Carter’s full first name could be Margaret, when everyone calls her Peggy. It comes from Maggie, another nickname for Margaret.
Margaret; old Persian for ‘pearl’ or Sanskrit for ‘cluster of blossoms’
Amelia / Amelie - Amy / Mel
This name and its French counterpart are a part of the list because of Amelia 'Amy’ Pond, a character I love dearly. I also knew someone once whose name was Amelie but no one could ever nail the French pronunciation so she had everyone call her Mel.
Amelia / Amelie; Old Germanic for ‘industrious’
Sarah - Sally
I had no idea that Sally came from the name Sarah until I started doing research for this post / project.
Sarah; Hebrew name meaning ‘princess’
Winifred - Winnie
I love this name especially becaus eof the book Tuck Everlasting. I read it in middle school and honestly enjoyed the book so much, I bought it for myself after my novel study for class had ended!
Winifred; Welsh name meaning ‘white wave’
Madeline - Maddie / Maddy / Madi
I have known many Madelines, with various different spellings, who liked being called Maddie, Maddy or Madi. I never knew, however, what the name meant until I did this project. That little French schoolgirl from the cartoon comes to mind as well...
Madeline; English name meaning ‘woman from the high tower’
William / Willow - Will
One of the names my parents were considering giving me before i was born, was William. I think would have liked to be called will, if they had named me that. It’s a nice androgynous nickname too, with a possible feminine route being Willow.
William; resolute protector
Willow; slender, graceful, a willow tree
Artemis - Artie
I always loved the Greek goddess Artemis growing up, and used to think that if I ever had a child I would name them Artemis. Their nickname would be Artie, another solid androgynous one for the list.
Artemis; Ancient Greek goddess of the hunt and the moon
Dorothy - Dot - Dottie
I know a Dorothy, whose husband lovingly calls her Dottie, a name no one else calls her. The name of a character from Canadian 90′s animated classic Reboot also comes to mind - Dot. Oddly enough, this name is the feminine version of Theodore, which is the root of the very first nickname on this list!
Dorothy; ‘gift of God’
